He spent two years developing within Liverpool’s academy and reserve structure before Brendan Rodgers handed him his senior breakthrough. His first-team debut arrived on September 20, 2012, during Liverpool’s Europa League victory over Young Boys. Three days later, he appeared in the Premier League against Manchester United. There was an excitement around Suso then. He possessed the sort of close control and imagination that immediately marked him out as different, comfortable receiving possession in crowded areas and always looking for the next possibility. Suso Never Quite Established Himself At Anfield Liverpool appearances ultimately proved difficult to secure consistently. Suso played 21 times for the club and scored once, finding the net against Middlesbrough during a League Cup tie in the first half of the 2014-15 campaign. The previous season had been spent on loan at Almería, where he made 35 appearances and scored three goals. That spell offered valuable senior experience, although his opportunities at Liverpool remained limited following his return. A permanent move to AC Milan followed in January 2015, allowing Suso to begin the most substantial period of his career away from Merseyside. His time with Liverpool therefore occupies only a relatively small part of his professional record, although those early appearances remain part of a fascinating era at Anfield, when Rodgers was attempting to reshape the club around younger, technically adventurous players. Cadiz Provides Fitting Final Chapter Suso eventually returned to Cadiz last summer, completing the geographical circle of his career. The club said the Spaniard had made a personal effort to return to the team where his football journey started, hoping to help Cadiz return to the highest level of Spanish football. Circumstances during the past year prevented that ambition from being fulfilled. His importance to Cadiz still extended far beyond performances on the pitch. Suso eventually became captain of his boyhood club, carrying the responsibility that comes with representing somewhere so deeply connected to his own identity. Now another role awaits. From October, Suso will serve as an institutional representative for Cadiz, remaining within the organisation and becoming one of the public faces of the club. For former Liverpool players, retirement often arrives with memories of what might have been alongside appreciation for everything that followed.
