Vinicius 8.0, Mbappe 5.0 | Real Betis 1-0 Real Madrid: Player ratings Real Madrid fell to a disappointing defeat on Friday night, as Real Betis struck late to ensure a 1-0 loss at La Cartuja. It extends Los Blancos’ recent poor form when facing Los Verdiblancos in Andalusia, now with no wins in five in that regard. It was a very poor team performance from Real Madrid. They were very good in the first half, but when they completely fell off in the second – and that allowed Betis to gain the ascendency, which ends with Troy Parrott’s goal in the 81st minute. Player ratings Thibaut Courtois – 6/10 Courtois really did not have much to do at La Cartuja, aside from making a fantastic save to deny Nelson Deossa’s header – unfortunately, he could not keep out Parrott’s rebound. Denzel Dumfries – 5.0/10 It was somewhat of a surprise that Dumfries was brought back into the starting line-up after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s good performance last weekend, and Mourinho’s decision was not vindicated. The Dutchman did not contribute effectively, and it was no surprise that he was one of the first to be taken off in the second half. Ibrahima Konate – 5.5/10 Konate has had a good start to life at Real Madrid, but he was not at his best here. He won only one of six duels, which summed up his disappointing performance. Dean Huijsen – 6.5/10 Huijsen was undoubtedly the better of the two Real Madrid central defenders. He had a really nice moment in the second half when he won the ball before playing in Kylian Mbappe, which epitomised the confidence that he has at this moment. Marc Cucurella – 6/10 Cucurella has made a good start to life at Real Madrid, but he wasn’t at his best in this one. He did well to stop Antony, but aside from that, he did not contribute much else – particularly in attack. Federico Valverde – 6/10 Like the whole team, Valverde had a good first half, but he struggled to marshal the Real Madrid midfield in the second. He switched off for Betis’ goal, allowing Parrott a free run to score after Courtois’ excellent save. Eduardo Camavinga – 5.5/10 Camavinga was good last week, but the decision to start him at La Cartuja was all wrong. He really struggled to help Valverde in the centre of the park, and that had a knock-on effect on the Uruguayan’s performance. Looking at this display, it’s no surprise that Real Madrid would have been happy to sell him in the summer. Arda Guler – 7/10 Guler was very bright in the first half, creating a lot of big chances for his teammates. However, he was a little fortunate not to be sent off for two yellow cards, and sensibly, he was one of the first players to be substituted. Jude Bellingham – 6.5/10 Bellingham has started the season in ferocious form, but this was a tame display. He tried his best to get involved in an attacking sense, but not much went right for him. Vinicius Junior – 8/10 Vinicius was fantastic in Seville. Off the ball, he worked the hardest he ever has in a Real Madrid jersey, and that would have been greatly appreciated by Mourinho. He was also the biggest on the ball, and he also got his reward when he won a late penalty, only for Kylian Mbappe to be denied by Alvaro Valles. Kylian Mbappe – 5/10 A miserable night for Mbappe, who left his shooting boots in Madrid. He somehow did not score just before half time when his two efforts were cleared off the line, and his performance was summed up with a poor spot-kick that Betis goalkeeper Valles easily saved. Substitutes Yan Diomande – 6/10 Diomande tried his best to get involved, but it’s clear that he is very much off the pace right now. Like Valverde, he also lost Parrott for Betis’ goal. Bernardo Silva – 6/10 Should’ve started, but tried his best to make a difference. Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6/10 It was a surprise that he didn’t start, although he was quite wasteful with the ball during his cameo. Carlos Espi – 7/10 Alongside Vinicius, he was Real Madrid’s biggest threat – and he only came on in the 82nd minute. Scored a brilliant overhead kick that was ruled out for offside by VAR, and had a header well-saved by Valles in stoppage time.
