Barcelona’s new captain hierarchy confirmed with one surprise addition Barcelona have finalised their captaincy structure for the 2026/27 season, with Lamine Yamal making a major leap into the leadership group despite being only 19. According to Mundo Deportivo , Hansi Flick played a decisive role in establishing the new hierarchy after the departures of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo left Barcelona needing a reshuffle.  The German coach initially selected Raphinha, Pedri and Eric Garcia as provisional captains before the squad completed its internal voting process. Raphinha and Pedri will now serve as Barcelona’s first and second captains, respectively.  The remaining three places were decided by a vote among the players, with Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal emerging as the choices. How Barcelona’s captaincy was decided Flick had already made his preference clear before the Joan Gamper Trophy, naming Raphinha, Pedri and Eric Garcia as the temporary leadership group while the squad was being finalised.  Barcelona’s official account later confirmed that the final decision would come after the squad was complete and the players could vote.  The manager subsequently retained Raphinha and Pedri as the first two captains, while the squad selected Garcia, De Jong and Yamal for the other positions. Garcia’s selection carries little surprise, as the defender has earned considerable respect for his professionalism, discipline and commitment, while his influence has grown through the trust Flick has shown. Lamine Yamal is the new leader De Jong’s inclusion is also logical, as he was already part of Barcelona’s previous leadership group and, following Ter Stegen’s departure, is now the most senior player in the squad by age and experience. Yamal is different. His elevation is less about seniority and more about influence. Barcelona’s No.10 has become one of the defining players in Flick’s team, and his authority on the pitch is already obvious.  His selection suggests the club’s leadership structure is being influenced not only by experience but also by sporting importance. Making him a captain at 19 is bold, but it is not necessarily premature.  Barcelona are recognising the influence Yamal already possesses rather than waiting for his age to catch up with his status.
