A Erling Haaland header in the 26th minute was just enough for City make it three wins from three matches to start the new Premier League season. When the starting lineups were announced , Enzo Maresca had made only one change to the starting lineup which dispatched Crystal Palace 4-1 last weekend. Iliman Ndiaye replaced Phil Foden in the starting lineup as the Senegalese international made his Premier League debut from the start today. Enzo Fernandez was on the bench for today’s game. However, that changed 15 minutes before kickoff. Nico O’Reilly suffered an injury in the warm up and Enzo Fernandez replaced him in Manchester City’s starting lineup. First half. Manchester City began the game dominating possession, however it was Coventry City who should have taken the lead inside the opening eight minutes. First, Abdukodir Khusanov played a ball back to Gianluigi Donnarumma on his own goal line. The Italian had a poor first touch which almost trickled over the goal line to give Frank Lampard’s side the lead in the 6th minute. However, two minutes later, Coventry City should have taken the lead. Antoine Semenyo played a dangerous ball from the right into midfield which Coventry City striker Taiwo Awoniyi intercepted. Awoniyi surged clean through on goal with only the keeper to beat. But he fired his shot wide of the post with Gianluigi Donnarumma rushing out to save his team’s blushes. Taiwo Awoniyi’s chance was a clear warning shot to Enzo Maresca’s side that today’s match wouldn’t be a walk in the park. Manchester City’s first shot on target would arrive in the 16th minute. Elliot Anderson was fouled in midfield and he quickly took the free kick and set free Rayan Cherki. Cherki surged into space and played in Erling Haaland with a quality through ball. Haaland fired in a powerful low drive from inside the Coventry penalty area across goal which Coventry City keeper Carl Rushworth got down well to save. Rayan Cherki almost gives Manchester City the lead as Enzo Maresca’s side begins to push. Manchester City almost took the lead in the 22nd minute. City played their way out of their own half with some crisp passing. The ball found Enzo Fernandez who drove at the backpedalling Coventry City defence. Fernandez played a ball to Rayan Cherki who stood up the Coventry defence and cut onto his left foot. Cherki fired in a shot that had Coventry keeper Carl Rushworth but hit the post and stayed out. A minute later, Gianluigi Donnarumma made a fantastic save to prevent Coventry from taking the lead. A long throw-in made its way into the City penalty area and found its way to the back post. Iliman Ndiaye lost Jack Rudoni, who got behind him at the back post, and he got a powerful header on target. However, Donnarumma made a fantastic save from point blank range to deny Frank Lampard’s side from taking the lead. Erling Haaland heads City into the lead. Antoine Semenyo was played into space by Enzo Fernandez on the right wing and the Ghana international got to the byline to play in a fantastic cross to the back post. Semenyo’s cross was met by Erling Haaland, whose powerful header gave City the lead. Coventry City had their moments up until Haaland’s goal but it was Enzo Maresca’s side who would take the lead. As the game entered the 40th minute, Manchester City were dominating possession. They had 81% of possession, which tells the story of how the game was unfolding. However, outside of two Enze Fernandez shots which were blocked in the Coventry penalty area, City weren’t fashioning any real, clear-cut chances. At the other end, Taiwo Awoniyi was a constant threat for Frank Lampard’s side. Awoniyi’s pace, power and work rate impossible to ignore. Erling Haaland sees a shot saved as City press to make it 2-0. Rayan Cherki would slip Erling Haaland through on goal in the 43rd minute. The French international would play a superb ball through the heart of the Coventry defence which sent Haaland clear. Haaland got himself into the area and then he hurdled a challenge from Coventry defender Bobby Thomas. The Norwegian international got a powerful shot on goal but Carl Rushworth stood clear to batter the ball away with his left hand. First half thoughts and impressions. Erling Haaland’s chance would be the final significant moment of the first half. Manchester City deservedly took a 1-0 lead into the interval. City had dominated possession and perhaps should have taken a bigger lead into halftime. However, it wasn’t a vintage City performance by any stretch and you did feel that Enzo Maresca would want his team to go up a gear or two after halftime. Coventry City did have their moments in the first half. Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni had two great chances to score, but it wasn’t to be. The match was far from over at halftime as City had to click into gear to ensure they picked up all three points. The statistics from the first half, which can be seen below, paint a picture of how the first half unfolded. But what they don’t indicate is that it was clear that Manchester City did have another gear or two to find after halftime. For all their dominance, City weren’t at their best, which did leave open the possibility of Coventry finding a way back into the game if City took their foot off the pedal after halftime. Second half. The first ten minutes of the second half didn’t bring any real significant shift in how the match was unfolding. Manchester City were dominating possession once again, without creating any real clear-cut chances. Coventry were digging deep defensively and were attempting to get forward when the opportunity presented itself. However, the pattern of the match was much the same as the first half. Frank Lampard made two substitutions in the 63rd minute. Caleb Yirenkyi and Loum Tchaouna replaced Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni. The pair of substitutes instantly brought pace and energy to Coventry’s play. Phil Foden replaced Rayan Cherki in the 66th minute as Enzo Maresca sought the cushion of a second goal for his team. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a strong save to deny Loum Tchaouna in the 70th minute. Taiwo Awoniyi won a crucial duel in a dangerous position against Ruben Dias and he slipped Tchaouna in behind the City defence on the left. The French winger got a powerful right-footed strike on goal from just outside the City area, which Gianluigi Donnarumma got down superbly well to his right to save. Phil Foden sees a weak shot cleared off the line but the goal likely wouldn’t have stood. Manchester City perhaps should have taken a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute. Iliman Ndiaye floated in a quality cross from the left which found its way to Erling Haaland at the back post. Haaland recovered the ball and teed up Phil Foden for a simple shot from eight yards out. Foden’s shot lacked any power and was cleared off the line by the Coventry defence. However, if Foden scored it likely would’ve been ruled out due to Erling Haaland handling the ball in the build up. Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Coventry an equaliser in the 80th minute. A dangerous ball was floated in from the right for Coventry, which saw Coventry City striker Ellis Simms and Abdukodir Khusanov duel at the back post. The ball dropped invitingly for Ellis Simms, who fired in a volley on goal from six yards out. However, Gianluigi Donnarumma came out and blocked the shot with his face to preserve City’s lead. As the game entered second half stoppage time, Coventry City were pushing for an equalizer. Frank Lampard’s side were the most dangerous of the two teams as Enzo Maresca’s side were hanging on to their 1-0 lead. Manchester City would safely navigate five minutes of second half stoppage time to make it three wins from three to begin the new Premier League season. It was far from a vintage performance from Enzo Maresca’s side but they picked up an important three points thanks to an Erling Haaland header. First impressions from Manchester City’s dogged win over Coventry City. Manchester City kept their first clean sheet of the season and came away from today’s match with a hard-fought 1-0 win. A first half header from Erling Haaland was enough for Enzo Maresca’s side to pick up all three points against a plucky Coventry City outfit. First of all, Coventry City deserves credit for making the second half a scrap. Frank Lampard’s side had their moments, and were determined to remain in the game. On another day, with better finishing, they could have come away from today’s match with at least a point. For Manchester City, today’s match was evidence that they are still working their way into the new season. In the first half, they dominated possession and should have been out of sight. However, they weren’t, which kept Coventry in the game. City ran out of steam as the game wore on and their overall team performance showed that their plenty of scope for improvement in Enzo Maresca’s side. However, the positive is that City picked up all three points and have clear areas to improve in their play. Today’s match wasn’t anything to write home about, but City have nine points from a possible nine to start the new season and that is all that mattered today.
