He said: “I’ll put Liverpool in that bracket as well. I think overall their signings will come to be seen as being better in time and we caught a glimpse of that last night at Ipswich.” It was a relatively measured verdict following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory at Ipswich Town. The response from the TNT Sports panel was similarly positive about what had been seen on the pitch, with the observation: “Yeah, a much better performance from them.” That provides the central point of Ornstein’s assessment. His judgement of Liverpool’s Transfer Window was a C, although he also expressed the belief that the signings could ultimately be viewed more favourably as time passes. Ipswich performance offers encouragement The reference to Ipswich was significant because Ornstein specifically connected Liverpool’s recruitment with what had been witnessed in their latest performance. Rather than placing Liverpool among the clubs receiving the highest grades, he suggested the value of the business might become clearer later. “I think overall their signings will come to be seen as being better in time,” was Ornstein’s assessment. Liverpool therefore sit some distance below the clubs placed in the A+ category during the TNT Sports discussion. Ornstein selected Brentford for his highest grade, explaining: “I think they didn’t recruit tons but what they did they recruited really well.” Chelsea were also discussed positively, with Lescott saying: “I think they did the best business in regard to what they needed for their squad, regardless of fees.” Manchester City were placed around the B category, while Liverpool joined Newcastle further down the rankings. Ornstein expects potentially busy January market For Liverpool, the immediate verdict remains clear. Ornstein placed their Transfer Window in the C category while expressing confidence that their recruitment could look better with time. The evidence he chose to support that argument was Liverpool’s performance at Ipswich. January, meanwhile, already appears to be part of the wider conversation.
