The summer window has closed, and of course PSG ended it without a goalkeeper. Last summer they signed Lucas Chevalier for big money from Lille. That move didn’t work out, and soon backup Matvey Safonov was first choice. The Russian did well, but there was always the sense that the Parisians could improve on him. An attempt to sign Zion Suzuki failed, and there were no takers for Chevalier. So PSG went into this season with the same setup as last. But it’s been a slow start for Safonov, and there are already those saying it was a mistake to not add a new option. Clearly that’s just not good enough. But it would be harsh to blame the poor results on him. The defending hasn’t protected him well enough, and the attackers haven’t been clinical enough either. Right now it’s a team issue, not an individual one. In other news… It’s been a slow start to the season in terms of results, but the situation around summer signing Lucas Digne is much more concerning than that.
