Women’s U-20 World Cup ultimate guide: Team insight, players to watch and predicted finishes The U-20 World Cup is the top competition in the women’s youth game. USWNT manager Emma Hayes called it ‘the biggest platform for young players to play in’. Teams who do well here often go on to dominate at senior level. Spain won the U-20 title in 2022, then won the senior World Cup the following year with several of the same players. The tournament runs from September 5th-27th, hosted across four Polish cities — Łódź, Bielsko-Biała, Katowice and Sosnowiec. With the action now underway, here is the ultimate guide to the tournament broken down by team, including players you should keep an eye on. Women’s U-20 World Cup Group A Poland Poland will make their tournament debut as the hosts. Their previous competitive fixture was an impressive 2-0 win over Mexico. The team is coached by Marcin Kasprowicz, who holds a PhD. His thesis examined the game structure at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Polish women’s football has seen a massive rise in recent years, with the senior team qualifying for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 for the first time. Barcelona’s Ewa Pajor is a huge icon for Polish football. Kasprowicz said: “It’s a special time everything we do now is for the development of Polish women’s football. They are one of four South American teams to have qualified. While Argentina are not as prominent in the women’s game as they are in the men’s, they will want to make their mark. They impressed in the group phase of the recent South American Under-20 Women’s Football Championship, beating both Ecuador and Brazil. Form dipped in the final round, though, where they lost to Ecuador and were beaten 4-0 by Brazil. Their mixed results make the team hard to predict, but on their day they can be unstoppable. Player to watch: Annika Paz Predicted result: Round of 16 Benin Benin were one of four African qualifiers for the global final. They beat Guinea, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire along the way, delivering some promising results. It is the first time that the Young Amazons have qualified for the competition. One to watch is 15-year-old Romaine Gandonou. Gandonou was African qualifying’s top scorer with 14 goals. The young star has already featured for the senior team and has attracted attention from both PSG and Barcelona. Player to watch: Romaine Gandonou Predicted result: Group stage Mexico Mexico have qualified for the tournament for the 12th time. They secured their spot by reaching the final of the 2025 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, where they were beaten 3-2 by Canada. The team has reached the quarter-finals four times before, most recently in 2022. With the Mexican FA’s focus on the youth set-up, most of the players play in Mexico’s top flight and have plenty of experience at a high level. However, they are up against some tough competition and may struggle to progress out of the group. They secured their place by winning the South American U-20 Women’s Football Championship. The squad recently played the U-20 USWNT, losing 2-0 and drawing 0-0. With the US being one of the tournament favourites, this has given them confidence they can go toe to toe with the giants. Player to watch: Dudinha Predicted result: Quarter-finals Canada Canada are a quality side with good experience. The young Canadians earned a spot by winning the 2025 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, beating the US and Mexico along the way. They have struggled in recent matches, losing to group-mates England and Brazil and drawing with Japan. In this group, every match matters, and they may not make it out of the group. Player to watch: Chloe Taylor Predicted result: Group stage England England’s squad is stacked with WSL, NWSL and Champions League experience. They have played seven fixtures in the build-up, with mixed but promising results. England’s best finish remains 2018, when they reached the semi-final before losing 2-0 to Japan. They then beat France on penalties to finish third overall. Manager Lydia Bedford is confident, saying: “By the time we get to the World Cup, we’ll have played four non-European opponents since June, and I think that puts us in a really positive place.” With hard work and a little luck, England may be able to go far. The Tanzanians edged Cameroon on away goals (3-3 agg.) to qualify. It is their first time qualifying for the tournament, and the squad has not had much international experience. With the quality in this group, they are likely to struggle. Player to watch: Mary Aaron Predicted result: Group stage Women’s U-20 World Cup Group C Ecuador Ecuador will feature in their first ever U-20 Women’s World Cup. They struggled initially in the South American Under-20 Women’s Football Championship, before winning a string of games to become the second South American team to qualify, behind Brazil. They ended the tournament as runners-up, their best ever finish, and go into the World Cup full of confidence. With momentum behind them, they have enough quality to spring a surprise in the knockout rounds. Player to watch: Mary Guerra Predicted result: Round of 16 France France are looking to make serious headway in this competition. They reached the European U-19 Championship final in 2025, losing to Spain. The French side were runners-up at the World Cup in 2016 and want to go one better this time. Their squad has plenty of talent and experience, such as Maeline Mendy, who is a regular for Paris FC and has been attracting serious attention from across Europe. The Black Princesses made it to the tournament by beating Uganda in the play-offs. The squad have been training hard since qualifying, with an initial 45-player squad battling it out for a place in the final selection. Player to watch: Mafia Nyame Predicted result: Group stage South Korea South Korea qualified by reaching the semi-finals of the U-20 Women’s Asian Cup. They have serious pedigree in the tournament, having featured eight times previously and finishing third in 2010. While they have struggled more in recent years, they are ready to make it deep into the tournament. They have had mixed results in the lead-up, including a 1-1 draw against Sweden and a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands. Italy will have to sharpen up fast if they want a chance against the likes of Japan and the United States. Player to watch: Maya Cherubini Predicted result: Group stage Japan Japan booked their spot at Poland 2026 by winning the U-20 Women’s Asian Cup. They will be looking to win their second U-20 World Cup trophy this time out. In preparation, Japan played some of the top contenders in friendlies. They beat England 1-0 and drew 2-2 with Canada, giving them good experience against teams outside Asia. They qualified by winning the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the final. The squad will be confident going into the tournament after the OFC win. Their group is tough and they have limited experience against teams outside Oceania, but they have enough about them to cause an upset. Player to watch: Emily Lyon Predicted result: Round of 16 United States The United States have not only qualified for every edition of the tournament since it began in 2002, they have also won it the most times, joint with Germany and North Korea. However, they have not lifted the trophy since 2012. The US stars will have added motivation, as USWNT senior manager Emma Hayes highly rates the competition and will be there in person to scout young talent. Player to watch: Kennedy Fuller Predicted result: Quarter-finals Embed from Getty Images Women’s U-20 World Cup Group E Colombia Colombia were hosts of the last U-20 World Cup, which helped to promote the women’s game in the South American country. Their best previous result was fourth in 2010. In the lead-up to the tournament, Colombia beat the United States 1-0 and lost to England on penalties after holding them to a 0-0 draw. This experience and confidence will do wonders for a team hoping to go deep in the competition. Player to watch: Maithé López Predicted result: Quarter-finals Costa Rica Costa Rica have qualified for the World Cup for the third time in a row. The last time Las Ticas faced group-mates North Korea, they lost 9-0. Manager Patricia Aguilar is excited to show how far the team have come in the two years since that result, and they have real talent to back it up, with players already part of the senior set-up. Player to watch: Sheika Scott Predicted result: Group stage North Korea North Korea come into this tournament as reigning champions, having lifted the trophy for a third time in 2024. The North Koreans won all seven of their games at the last tournament without needing extra time. The team also finished runners-up in the recent U-20 Asian Cup. They will be hoping to retain their crown this time out. They have had mixed results in the lead-up to the tournament, including a 2-0 loss to England in their final warm-up game. They are drawn in a tough group, but have some quality goalscorers in the squad who could make the difference. Player to watch: Luana Bessa Predicted result: Round of 16 Women’s U-20 World Cup Group F China China have reached the final twice before but have never won the U-20 World Cup. They qualified via an impressive Asian Cup campaign, where they ultimately lost to Japan, who went on to win the tournament. They have a tough group, but their pedigree and depth of talent give them a real chance of reaching the knockout stage. Player to watch: Li Ke Predicted result: Round of 16 New Caledonia New Caledonia have qualified for the tournament for the first time, having reached the OFC final, where they lost to New Zealand. The small country has a population of just under 300,000, making them the smallest nation to qualify. They will likely struggle but it is a great experience for the team to play at such a high level. Player to watch: Kheimera Gondou Predicted result: Group stage Nigeria Nigeria are seasoned regulars at the U-20 World Cup, having never failed to qualify. The Falconets are truly the giants of African football, and they have finished runners-up in the competition twice. There is plenty of international experience in the squad, with some players already playing in the top divisions across Europe. They won the competition for the first time in 2022, and it is no surprise that the senior squad also won the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand for the first time a year later. Spain won the U-19 Euros last year, and most of the squad from that win will be playing at the World Cup. Their squad had a couple of big wins in the lead-up to the tournament, including a 6-0 win against the Netherlands.
