Shrewsbury fans seek answers from owner Wycherley

Wycherley, who has been at the helm of the Shropshire club since June 1996, first revealed he was ready to retire back in 2021 before putting the club on the market in 2024 . Since then there has been serious interest from several potential buyers, both locally and from abroad. But the suggestion is that the 85-year-old's love for the club has made it hard for him to let go, without retaining some sort of a personal connection. The delay has led to a general feeling of terrace unrest that has not been improved by Town's relegation back to League Two in 2025, stagnation last season and, although at least escaping a second successive relegation, another poor start this time round. Town have won just once in five games to sit 23rd in the fledgling table and, fearing a repeat of their one-season return to non-league in 2003, the club's three main supporters' groups have issued an open letter to Wycherley asking for "more clarity". They have posed the long-serving owner six questions to which they have asked for answers by 20 September. BBC Sport has also approached the club for comment. The six Shrewsbury fans' questions 1. We are told a takeover is progressing and has reached the Independent Football Regulator. Are you co-operating in full with this process, including signing and submitting all required paperwork? 2. Are you happy that the buyer you are working with is the right person to take Shrewsbury Town forward? 3. If so, can we be told who this buyer is? If not, can we be given a clear and reasonable answer as to why not? 4. What are the likely timescales to this process? It seems to have dragged on for some time, and more transparency on this point would ease anxiety among the supporter base. 5. Should this takeover deal not be completed, do you have the necessary resources available to fund a competitive budget both for the remainder of this season and the next one too? 6. What can we as supporters do to assist the club in a smooth and orderly transition to a new ownership group? What's on the agenda at Oteley Road? Shrewsbury are without midweek games for the next fortnight, so face just two fixtures before the fans' deadline expires - at home to Northampton Town next Saturday before the trip to Crewe Alexandra a week later. The fans are hoping that, by the following day, the Town owner will have addressed all their issues. Shrewsbury have not publicly addressed their planned takeover since mid-June when it was revealed that a second American consortium, separate to the bid that failed in 2025 , had become serious players.
