Devenny's dream debut 'couldn't have gone better'

New Stoke City signing Justin Devenny said that his debut double to help beat Charlton Athletic was a dream that "couldn't have gone much better". The Scotland-born Northern Ireland international opened the scoring with a 15th-minute penalty, then completed the scoring in a first-half goal deluge with a clever close-range flick. Yet, when he heads for Cardiff City for his second Stoke appearance on Tuesday, he can reflect on all that has happened to him in just a week - signed from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline night, then given an immediate starting debut against Charlton on Saturday. "I don't think I could have asked for much better," the 22-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke. "I'd only trained with the boys twice and I'm still getting to know their names. Straight through the door and almost straight into the deep end. But I liked that. It tested me. "This squad wants to be in the Premier League. The quality of the players here and the system suited me - and I wanted to be playing games." Stoke hit four to end Charlton's unbeaten start Stoke boss Mark Robins added: "When we knew he was available we pushed the button quickly to get him because there was a lot of interest. "He's scored two good goals, taken his chances well, but we've got other players who are hungry to do well too. As a team we will grow and get better because we've got decent depth and quality and that's the exciting part for me." The icing on the cake for Devenny - or piece of managerial genius from Robins - was telling his new man that he was immediately going to be on spot-kick duty. "I'd seen my name go up on the board as the designated penalty taker," added a smiling Devenny. "As much as we hadn't spoken about it, I knew I have a good record with penalties and I was going to put my name forward. When I saw my name up there it just made it that bit easier."
