Knight says contract talks not a current priority

Bristol City captain Jason Knight says talks over his contract have been put on pause with the football season taking "priority" for the time being. Knight is out of contract at Ashton Gate next summer and has been in discussions over a new deal for a number of months. He was subject to speculation over a move away during the recent transfer window however remained at the Robins for the new season and has played every minute of their five Championship games so far. "We just hadn't reached an agreement yet and that's natural in football," Knight told BBC Radio Bristol. "Not saying that's not going to happen it's just we're not there at the moment and the football has taken priority, because it's the Championship you don't really get a minute either way to sit down and chat about it." Robins still in talks with Knight over future City more aggressive in play-off pursuit - Wallace Bristol City have undergone significant change during the past six months, with a new chief executive officer, sporting director and manager coming in. Knight, 25, has played 146 games for City since signing in 2023 and said he and the club were "both aligned and happy" with the current status quo. "Maybe down the line we'll try and sort things out," he added. "We have a good relationship - me, the club, the fans - they know what they're going to get from me more often than not and that isn't going to change whether things get agreed tomorrow or down the line. "It's just going to be the same Jason Knight that captains the club and tries to do well." After a defeat by Millwall in the opening game of the season, the Robins have taken 10 points from a possible 12 since, beating Portsmouth, Preston and Burnley in their past three games. They visit Southampton on Saturday, in their next outing before the first international break of the campaign, and Knight said momentum was key. "It's always important to start well and we certainly have," he said. "The lads we've brought in have hit the ground running which doesn't always happen. As we go through the season there will be ups and downs, especially with the younger players. It was important to start well and keep that ball rolling."
