Hansi Flick’s plans for Rodri set: Barcelona captain will have reduced minutes

Hansi Flick’s plans for Rodri set: Barcelona captain will have reduced minutes According to information provided exclusively to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez, Hansi Flick is planning to keep Rodri and Pedri together in Barcelona’s midfield this season, even after Frenkie de Jong returns from injury. The plan would see Rodri take minutes away from De Jong rather than Pedri, signalling the importance the Barcelona head coach already places on the blockbuster summer signing. Rodri’s arrival from Manchester City raised questions given the depth Flick already had available in midfield.  Yet, the Spaniard has quickly made an impression inside the dressing room and is beginning to assume a leadership role within the squad. On the other hand, Brian Farinas has also been promoted to the first team . Pedri will not lose his place as well. His understanding with Pedri has been particularly significant, as Barcelona have also been operating at an optimum level with the pair together, giving Flick little reason to alter the balance when De Jong becomes available. The situation could leave De Jong facing a difficult battle for his place. De Jong’s injury has complicated his return De Jong has yet to feature this season after suffering an injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands international opted for conservative treatment rather than surgery. Barcelona did not agree with that approach but ultimately respected his decision, having preferred the midfielder to undergo an operation. De Jong could potentially return in October , but by then Rodri may already have established himself as one of Flick’s preferred midfielders. From Flick’s perspective, having Rodri changes the equation considerably.  Barcelona did not sign him because the squad lacked midfield options; they brought in a player capable of adding control, experience and authority to an already talented unit. Pedri’s place appears secure, while Rodri is positioning himself as the player competing directly with De Jong for minutes.
