Jamie Carragher backs Barcelona to return to glory days in Champions League: ‘They play a special brand of football’ Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes there is something uniquely special about Barcelona winning the Champions League while staying true to the footballing identity that has defined the club for generations. The former Liverpool defender was speaking after watching Barcelona open their European campaign against Feyenoord.  For Carragher, the appeal lies in seeing Barça succeed without abandoning the style that has made them one of football’s most recognisable clubs. “I don’t think there’s anything better than watching Barcelona win the Champions League in their own style,” said the former player on CBS Sports. Carragher also drew a clear distinction between Barcelona and Real Madrid. While acknowledging Real Madrid’s success in the competition, he argued that Barça’s football carries an appeal of its own. “Real Madrid are the most successful team, but you don’t stick with their style. I don’t think there’s anything better than seeing Barcelona win the Champions League in their own style.  “Perhaps the way PSG have played over the last two years, but (Barça) is a special football club that plays a special brand of football, unrivalled.” Lamine Yamal reminds Carragher of Barça’s best era Carragher also looked back at Barcelona’s greatest teams and suggested the current generation could eventually reach a similar level. Those memories naturally led back to Messi and the period when Barcelona dominated European football. “That’s where Messi became the best player in the world,” Carragher recalled. Lastly, Carragher sees Lamine Yamal as another reason for optimism. The teenager may still have plenty to learn, but Carragher believes his age needs to be taken into account. “It may be true that he wasn’t at his best in the summer, but he’s 19 and has already won the European Championship and the World Cup.
