We must make Priestfield a 'fortress', says Ainsworth

[Shutterstock] Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth says his side must improve their home form in his second full season in charge. The Gills have taken one point from their opening two home League Two matches and also went out of the League Cup 3-0 at home to League One Luton Town. Ainsworth's side won only eight of their 23 home league matches in 2025-2026 as they finished 17th in the table. "I want to start winning at Gillingham, I do," he told BBC Radio Kent. "We should have won the Northampton game, and the Walsall match we should have been right in there - but it somehow got away from us." Gillingham are currently 13th in the division after taking six points from their opening five matches. Their first win came at Rochdale last Saturday. "Brilliant to perform at Rochdale like we did. I think we're the best away team in the league at the moment form-wise and that's something to be proud of. "I just want to win at home. Let's start turning this into a tough place. I think that's been one of the hurdles I need to get over. "Since I've come in, its not been the fortress I want it to be, but this is my team now. This is what my team looks like, I can feel it - I think many people can see it. "This is what I want to turn Priestfield into, this winning territory for us, and hopefully that will start on Saturday." Darrell Clarke's Tranmere are the next visitors to Priestfield on Saturday.
