Moyes on Norgaard, 'the feeling of unity' and free agents

Everton boss David Moyes has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (kick-off 17:30 BST). Here are the key lines from his news conference: Summer signing Christian Norgaard is still unavailable, but it is anticipated the 32-year-old will be back in contention after the international break. Explaining the situation further, Moyes said: "I don't think we expected his recovery to take this long when we signed him. We are looking forward to gaining his experience, but we haven't even had him on the grass yet. It is disappointing - for us and for him - but hopefully it won't be too long." Jack Grealish is "a boy who needs football matches more than he needs training", so he could be in line for his first start since January this weekend. Moyes added: "It will be incredibly exciting to have him in our starting line-up. If he gives us what he gave us at the start of last season, we will be thrilled." Everton's unbeaten start to the season is "pleasing in some aspects", but Moyes "would have liked to get another win rather than a draw somewhere along the way". He did praise his players for doing "a really good job", though. Moyes said there is a link between having a smaller squad and the feeling of unity: "You only have to look at Leicester City 's title-winning squad to see how their small group of players thrived. It's the amount of games which means you need the extra players, but we don't have European football this year so maybe we can find a way of getting through with what we've got." However, if Moyes had the choice, he would rather have had "more numbers" this season. His ideal figure would have been "21 outfield players" compared to the 18 he currently has at his disposal. He confirmed that Everton are exploring the free agent transfer market, with the possibility of boosting their squad - though "it isn't easy to find a player who could make a difference" in the Premier League. On Saturday's opponents Tottenham still being in search of their first league goal and win: "It wasn't too long ago that we were in those situations as a club. We know we can only look after ourselves. We didn't quite make it over the line there a couple of months ago, so hopefully we do it this time." The upcoming two-week international break will be "difficult for everybody to manage". He explained: "There will be a lot of players who will end up playing a lot more minutes than others and injuries could be a problem as well. We've got to hope that our boys do play a bit, but maybe not all of the games."
