Mainz’s Ransford Königsdörffer defends provocative goal celebration: “I received constant abuse.” Mainz 05 attacker Ransford Königsdörffer has explained the reasoning behind his provocative goal celebration against former club Hamburg , revealing that he had endured a year of racist abuse, death wishes and deeply personal attacks on social media. Königsdörffer returned to the Volksparkstadion for the first time last Sunday after leaving HSV for Mainz during the summer. The 24-year-old entered with the visitors already leading 3-0 and was greeted by a mixture of applause and whistles. He later completed the 5-0 rout in stoppage time before celebrating emphatically in front of the home support. The reaction immediately became a major subplot to Hamburg’s heavy defeat. HSV captain Nicolai Remberg confronted his former teammate afterward and publicly criticized the celebration, though he also acknowledged that Königsdörffer had been subjected to abuse from sections of the crowd. Königsdörffer has now supplied important additional context. “I had thought a little beforehand about whether I really wanted to do it,” the Mainz forward, as quoted by Kicker , told the Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung . “The main reason was that for a year I received messages weekly, sometimes daily, in which people wished death upon me or every conceivable injury. There were racist insults, insults about my cousin who died, insults about my parents.” Königsdörffer: “I’m not going to put up with it” Königsdörffer made clear that the celebration was not directed at HSV as an institution. He specifically excluded the Nordtribüne, club management, staff and his former teammates from his criticism. “It wasn’t directed at the Nordtribüne or anyone from the club management, staff or players,” Königsdörffer said. “I’m very fond of all of them. I’ve also said several times that I felt very comfortable at HSV. But I was continuously insulted for a year and simply wanted to express that I’m not going to put up with it. I think the people who write things like that simply don’t understand it any other way. That’s why I celebrated in that manner.” Königsdörffer had previously spoken about online hate The subject is not entirely new. GGFN reported in February that Königsdörffer had already spoken publicly about the hate he was receiving during a difficult period at Hamburg . At the time, the former Dynamo Dresden attacker attempted to brush off much of the criticism. “I’ve received a lot of hate,” Königsdörffer said at the time. “But I don’t really give a shit. I’m not that interested in it. What’s important to me are the people close to me, the coaches, the team, my advisors, my family and my friends.” His latest comments reveal the extent to which some of those messages went considerably beyond ordinary football criticism. Königsdörffer told the Allgemeine Zeitung that there had been periods when the abuse became particularly extreme and reportedly showed the newspaper an example of one especially hateful message. He said he generally considers himself capable of dealing with the abuse, but stressed that its content should not be normalized. “I can basically deal with it,” Königsdörffer said. “But I simply don’t think it’s normal.
