Liverpool will wait until 2027 to open contract talks with club legend The summer transfer window may have just slammed shut but, that doesn't mean that talk of change has stopped at Liverpool. Many moves were made to change the Reds' first-team squad this summer with players such as Curtis Jones exiting while others such as Victor Munoz joined . Indeed, these moves all seem to be positive at the moment but, with how many changes their title rivals made over the summer, the Reds are still behind. Obviously, these moves have given the Reds a bit of a boost with the Anfield outfit still remaining unbeaten across all competitions. However, with so many changes still likely to come, they need to get all of their ducks in a row as soon as possible. But, for one reason or another, they continually seem to be postponing massive decisions which, if we're being honest, is far from ideal. Liverpool don't want to enter contract talks with Virgil van Dijk until at least 2027 Virgil van Dijk has undoubtedly been one of Liverpool's most important players since he joined from Southampton back in 2018. At the time, most people thought that the Reds had massively overpaid for the Dutchman but, since then, he's made them all eat their words. He's easily been the Reds' most notorious defender in recent memory and without him, they'd have won nowhere near as many trophies as they have. And, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, some fans are understandably getting worried about what the future has in store for their captain. Thanks to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool's plans for Van Dijk have now been made more than clear. "Liverpool are not planning to hold talks over Virgil van Dijk 's contract until next year, sources have told Football Insider," they wrote . "The 35-year-old will see his current contract expire in 2027 as things stand, and could be allowed to leave Anfield on a free transfer come the end of the season. "He remains a crucial part of Andoni Iraola's starting XI for now, but concerns about his age and the club's long-term plans mean no decision has been made yet. "As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool will follow a similar path to the last time Van Dijk signed a contract extension." Liverpool could be ruining their chances of improving in the 2027-28 season already From an outside perspective, it feels almost impossible for Liverpool to win the Premier League this season. Indeed, the club have spent well over £500 million on new players but, at the moment, it's unclear if they're even any better than during their 2024-25 campaign. Some players such as Bradley Barcola are obvious upgrades but, since others such as Mohamed Salah haven't even been replaced yet, everything is a little up in the air at the moment. And, the fact that they're not even going to think about a new deal for Van Dijk until 2027 is a massive shock. The Dutchman has already very clearly proven that he's still the Reds' best centre-back and, while others such as Jeremy Jacquet obviously need to be given playing time to get better, Van Dijk is still leagues above most of his teammates. Indeed, him being 35 years old probably doesn't help his case much but, since he didn't reach his peak until late on in his career, it still feels like he has a couple more years within him at the top level. Here's hoping Liverpool make the right decision and start thinking about a new contract for him as soon as possible.
