This was despite the fact that other media outlets had widely claimed that Araujo had a buyout clause embedded in his contract. The Italian journalist now confirms that Liverpool do indeed have a buyout clause in Araujo’s contract, which is not mandatory. The Reds, therefore, can opt to activate the release clause next summer if they are impressed with Araujo’s performances over the course of the season. If the Premier League giants do not activate the option, Araujo will return to Barcelona, although his prospects in Catalonia appear to be bleak at the moment, with the current defensive crop doing extremely well. The Uruguayan international has become a vital component at right-back in Andoni Iraola’s defensive scheme. Araujo recently raised many eyebrows with his fantastic assist to feed Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League this midweek. Overall, the defender has featured in five matches, and has constantly operated as a right-back in the last three matches. If the player can continue his impressive form throughout the course of the campaign, it won’t be surprising to see Liverpool activate his €55 million buyout clause next summer. This could play out well for Barcelona as the club could welcome the economic boost, especially considering the fact that Araujo is unlikely to become a part of Hansi Flick’s future plans anytime soon.
