Could Enzo Maresca unleash his new-look Manchester City midfield against United?
Could Enzo Maresca unleash his new-look Manchester City midfield against United? Manchester City completely refitted their midfield this summer. With Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez all departing the club, City had to strengthen their midfield with quality signings. City did exactly that by signing Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez during the summer. All three players have made a strong impression so far this season. However, the trio have not started a game together. Enzo Maresca is yet to unleash his new-look midfield. Perhaps that could occur against Manchester United today in the 199th Manchester derby. There is merit to the idea of Enzo Maresca unleashing the new-look Manchester City midfield against United. Enzo Maresca may feel that today is the day to start the trio of Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Enzo Fernandez together against Manchester United. It does appear that City’s ability to contain the threat of Michael Carrick’s side on the counter or their ability to get in behind may well decide today’s match. Starting a midfield of Bouaddi, Anderson and Enzo Fernandez could well give Manchester City a counter to this threat. Playing Bouaddi as the number six would give City a security blanket in midfield. The Moroccan midfielder is brilliant as a number six in midfield and he reads the game and snuffs out danger exceptionally well. Playing Elliot Anderson alongside him would give Manchester City extra energy in midfield. The England international is also a threat in possession and he could profit playing in an advanced role. Enzo Fernandez has played as a number ten for Maresca previously at Chelsea. The Argentinian midfielder is a weapon going forward and his overall midfield work would combine well with Bouaddi and Anderson. To make this work, Enzo Maresca would have to sacrifice one of Rayan Cherki or Phil Foden from his starting eleven. Is that a move Maresca is willing to make? Both players have played well so far this season, so perhaps not. However, you do sense that perhaps Enzo Maresca may go for security in midfield given what is at stake against Manchester United. A midfield trio of Bouaddi, Anderson, and Enzo Fernandez would offer this and a lot more. Enzo Maresca feels fortunate to have Bouaddi, Anderson and Enzo Fernandez in his sqaud. Speaking on Friday , Enzo Maresca told the media that he is lucky that Manchester City signed Ayyoub Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez this summer. He also said that Manchester City’s ability to replace club legends has been superb for an extended period of time. Maresca explained: “ I said already I feel very lucky because these three players arrive – the three midfielders Elliot, Enzo and Ayyoub. ” “ I also said that this club when Sergio Aguero left everyone was worried, [then] Erling arrived. Fernandinho [left] – Rodri [had] arrived – David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne [had] arrived. ” “ So, one of the big achievements of this club is to replace these big players and it’s not easy. ” Manchester City look to have struck gold by signing Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi during the summer transfer. Each player looms as a crucial component of Manchester City’s midfield now and into the future. The trio haven’t started a match together yet. Today’s Manchester derby could be the day where they do. Especially when you consider the strengths of Manchester United in transitions and how City may go about containing that threat. A midfield of Bouaddi, Anderson and Enzo Fernandez could be the ideal solution to that conundrum.
