Gent keen on signing former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess following release from Union St Gilloise
Gent keen on signing former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess following release from Union St Gilloise Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Gent are keen on bringing in Christian Burgess. The experienced English defender, formerly of Portsmouth and most recently Union St Gilloise, is a free agent after failing to agree a new deal with the Brussels side. Gent are not the only side interested in Burgess, with other sides from outside of Belgium looking to bring Burgess in. Burgess became a fan favourite during his time with Union, having joined the side from Portsmouth back in 2020. After making over 200 appearances for Portsmouth, Burgess went on to play 262 games for Union, scoring 18 goals and helping the side win two domestic cups and a first league title in over a century. The 34-year-old had been in talks with Union about a contract extension, but the former Portsmouth defender could not agree new terms with the club. Given that he was still very much capable of playing at the highest level of Belgian football, it is not surprising that Gent are keen on keeping him in the Pro League. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson
