Liverpool thought they'd solved a few problems in the last two transfer windows. They've spent well over half a billion, after all, reshaping the squad into something that would supposedly carry the club forward. It has not worked out that way. Instead, Liverpool lack depth and quality in several areas. The Reds know full well that they'll need to re-enter the market in 2027 and potentially spend a lot more money just to get things stable. Perhaps the most frustrating area there is full-back - an area Liverpool felt they'd essentially solved. But now a double-deal looks virtually certain if things are to improve. Left-back and right-back Liverpool replaced their full-backs in 2025. That shouldn’t be understated, either: they replaced one of the greatest full-back pairings in football history. Their picks to do that were Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez , with around £70m going out on the pair of them. A little over a year later, it’s safe to say that this will not be Liverpool’s long-term pairing. Frimpong has already been replaced, really. Ronald Araujo has taken over as first-choice and Frimpong is left waiting for opportunities. Liverpool will either trigger Araujo’s buy option next summer or sign someone else. There is now virtually no chance of Frimpong being the first-choice option going forward, while Conor Bradley remains an unknown quantity post-injury. And Kerkez? The jury is out. He still has every opportunity to make the role his own but performances have been disappointing. Enough so that Andoni Iraola tried Kostas Tsimikas there against Fulham only to give up on the experiment after 45 minutes. Tsimikas is a strange one, though. Liverpool thought they’d parted ways back in 2025 but an incredibly disappointing loan spell with AS Roma made it inevitable that he’d return to Anfield. His contract will expire next year, though, and that means signing a left-back. Either way, then, Liverpool are signing two full-backs next season. The big question is how serious those signings need to be. Are the Reds chasing two first-choice options, one on each side? Because that’s a very unwanted situation after the money spent last year. But as time goes on, that feels more and more likely, in all truth.
