The Spotify Camp Nou is considered the big favourite to host the 2029 final, three decades after it staged the unforgettable 1999 clash between Bayern Munich and Manchester United. Barcelona’s stadium is competing against Wembley, which is targeting the 2030 edition, and Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion for the honour. Encouragingly for Barcelona, significant progress was already made during UEFA’s previous meeting in Monaco, where the governing body reportedly welcomed the Catalans’ candidacy with a very positive disposition. Barcelona see hosting the final as a stepping stone towards also staging matches, and potentially the final, at the 2030 World Cup. The entire renovation is scheduled to be finished by 2028, by which point the stadium will boast a capacity of 105,000 spectators, making it one of the largest and most modern arenas in world football. The project has not been without its complications, however, having suffered several delays that forced Barcelona to play at the Olympic Stadium on Montjuic and, more recently, to phase their return to the Camp Nou. Despite those setbacks, the club remain confident the work will be fully completed well in advance of a potential 2029 final. Should everything fall into place, hosting European football’s premier fixture at a fully renovated Camp Nou would represent a crowning moment for Barcelona.
