During his playing career, Abate played for Milan, Napoli, Empoli, and Torino, among others. Abate played for the Granata in the 2008-09 campaign, scoring two goals in 27 appearances across all competitions. Torino had chased Alberto Aquilani before Abate, but the ex-Roma midfielder ultimately joined Sassuolo to replace Fabio Grosso, and his appointment was confirmed on Friday as well.
