Despite adapting to a new league, a new environment and, this season, a new coach in Jose Mourinho, Mbappe has continued to score at a relentless rate. Perhaps the most impressive detail of all is that Mbappe has now scored against every single La Liga team he has faced. That level of consistency against all types of opposition speaks to his sheer quality and adaptability, and he has already been among the goals again in the early weeks of the current campaign. Mbappe had described himself as “the chosen one” while suggesting Dembele’s path was hindered by injuries, remarks that reportedly did not sit well with the reigning Ballon d’Or holder. Dembele fired back by stressing the hard work behind his own rise, adding a layer of intrigue to an already fascinating race. Ultimately, though, silverware often proves decisive in the Ballon d’Or reckoning, and with Yamal boasting a World Cup and LaLiga title, Mbappe’s brilliant individual output may not be enough this time around.
