Ex-Manchester United 19yo shines for Arsenal again in EFL Trophy win The Arsenal u21s snatched a win over Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night, despite losing multiple players to the senior side’s League Cup squad. Photo via Arsenal.com While the first team were away in Ipswich for a League Cup match on Tuesday night, the u21s were playing away to Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy. The fixture clash meant the u21s were lacking some key players, with the likes of Max Dowman , Marli Salmon , Theo Julienne , and Ife Ibrahim all eligible for the youth game, but playing for the senior team instead. The team were also under pressure to get a result, having lost their opening game to Barnet. Another defeat would likely mean elimination at the group stage. But Arsenal responded well and equalised before the break, with Archie Stevens firing home impressively after a through ball from Maalik Hashi . There’s no denying that the hosts had their chances to retake the lead, and Arsenal goalkeeper Khari Ranson made an impressive double save early in the second half. Ranson also tipped a looping deflected effort over the bar, and saw one other good chance rebounding back off the post before he made another close-range save in the aftermath. But by staying in the game at 1-1, the Arsenal youngsters gave themselves the chance to win the match late on, which Andre Harriman-Annous did with a close range finish. Photo via Arsenal.com Evan Mooney took a shot from outside the area following a counter-attack, and Harriman-Annous was on hand to turn in for 2-1 after the goalkeeper’s initial save. Summer signing James Scanlon had played Mooney in for the initial chance, and the former Manchester United winger is continuing to impress with his new club. With two goals in three games and the multiple chances he created against Orient, he’s shining for the Gunners at the moment. “I wanted us to stay higher, because the higher we were, for the first 20 minutes, our back line was so high, I thought we were in control of the game,” u21 boss David Horseman said afterwards. “When you watch our first team defend high, the keeper and the centre-backs can defend the space [behind their line] and I think that’s something that we’ve probably got to look to do more. “But overall, I’m really proud of them and that’s a huge result, and it gives us half a chance in the last game [of the group] at Wimbledon.” Photo by Cameron Howard/Getty Images As it stands, the Arsenal u21s are second in the group, with two teams to progress to the knockouts. But that’s before Barnet’s game against AFC Wimbledon, which could see the Gunners drop to third with a Wimbledon win. Either way, Arsenal will have their fate in their own hands in the final game against Wimbledon on October 27th. A win in that match will see them through to the knockouts, whatever else happens.
