Liverpool find their world-class midfielder; just need to sign contract

Liverpool find their world-class midfielder; just need to sign contract Liverpool need themselves a world-class midfielder after failing to land one in the summer. Fortunately, it turns out they have one. Liverpool completely failed to sign a midfielder in the summer. That’s something we thought was literally impossible, such was their need for an upgrade on last season’s options. Even more ridiculous, they sold one in Curtis Jones and then opted not to replace him. Liverpool are actually down on options, then, despite struggling to control games all of last season. Now, they did try to sign someone. They’d have moved for a midfielder only if another option had left, namely Alexis Mac Allister . His departure would have triggered a signing and that probably would have been Lamine Camara from AS Monaco. None of that happened, of course. Instead, Liverpool are thanking their lucky stars that a world-class midfielder has shown himself - and in a complicated kind of way. Alexis Mac Allister is on fire So Mac Allister was the sacrifice this summer if Liverpool were to land a new midfielder. Instead, he's the star of their midfield and arguably their best player. The Argentine isn't just leading Liverpool for tackles per 90 minutes - 3.7 - but he's scored important goals against both Atlético Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur. He's recaptured his all-around game as he has in the past, when he may have been the outright best midfielder in the Premier League . That tackle rate, for instance, is top 10 in the Premier League right now across all positions. It's top 5 for midfielders. That's made him essentially undroppable for Liverpool - as shown by Andoni Iraola now relying on him as a first-choice option . Which is complicated. Liverpool planned to sell Mac Allister after his drop-off last season and he's the only senior midfielder without a contract offer. But right now? He's their best midfielder. He may even be their best player, and Mac Allister is hitting that world-class level that Liverpool desperately needed from a midfielder. Quite honestly, his form changes everything. Mac Allister should be the one Liverpool build around for the next three or four years. None of the others can touch him at his best and it seriously looks like we're witnessing that 'best' once again. New contract time? Absolutely.
