James Milner returns to Liverpool to help coach academy players James Milner has returned to Liverpool to take his first step into coaching, according to The Athletic . The former England international has joined Liverpool’s academy to temporarily help coaches work with the club’s young players as he works on his UEFA Pro Licence. The 40-year-old former midfielder retired from professional football this summer after an outstanding 24-year career. With his playing days now behind him, he has been invited by Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe to gain valuable coaching experience across the club’s youth teams. Under the informal arrangement, Milner will support academy staff rather than take charge of a specific age group. He worked with Liverpool’s Under-11s at the club’s Kirkby training centre last weekend and is expected to move between different squads as he develops his coaching skills. Milner spent eight years with Liverpool between 2015 and 2023. He made 332 appearances across all competitions and was a key player during Jurgen Klopp’s successful reign. Milner was part of the Liverpool side that won the Champions League in 2019 before helping the club end its 30-year wait for a Premier League title the following year. He also won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup during his trophy-laden spell with Liverpool. His experience, professionalism and understanding of the demands of top-level football could now prove valuable to the next generation coming through the academy. Milner also played for Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion. He also gained some early coaching experience under Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler during his time at the Amex Stadium. Milner already has a connection with Liverpool’s academy, having previously supported the youth set-up during his playing days. Liverpool have opened their doors to former players pursuing coaching qualifications. Conor Coady has worked with the U21s alongside Rob Page, while former academy defender Tom Clayton recently became assistant manager of the U16s.
