Hans-Joachim Watzke wanted to appoint Thomas Tuchel as Germany’s coach  Hans-Joachim Watzke, who has been the vice president of the DFB since 2022, has revealed that following the disaster at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, he wanted to hire the current England coach Thomas Tuchel as coach of the German national team. Speaking to Sky Germany , Watzke said: “We were eliminated in Qatar quite miserably. And then? Then you think at night or for two nights, what could be now?” Watzke further explained: “Oliver Bierhoff was still there at the time. It was not my decision who would be national coach. But the basic attitude was simple: We’ll continue with Hansi Flick. And Hansi is an excellent coach; you can see what he’s doing at Barcelona.” He believed that things would be more difficult after the World Cup because, beyond the results, the performance of the team was also bad. Watzke and Tuchel worked together at Borussia Dortmund when the latter managed the club between 2015 and 2017. Tuchel was dismissed a few days after winning the DFB Pokal following disagreements with the management regarding having to play a Champions League quarter-final home game a day after a bomb attack on the team bus.  Watzke stated that what has gone out to the public wasn’t the full truth and, despite that incident, the two men maintain a good relationship.  Before Tuchel was hired as England manager, Watzke was consulted and gave a good recommendation to his former colleague.   “Anyone who knows Tuchel as a personality also knows that he also imposes this pressure on himself. And as I said, I always had respect for it in the end, even in retrospect, because I don’t know if, when you were sitting on the bus at that moment, things felt different for you.
