Cristiano Ronaldo named in Portugal squad for Nations League Cristiano Ronaldo is set to continue his international career beyond the 2026 World Cup. The experienced forward has been included in new head coach Jorge Jesus’ first Portugal squad for the upcoming Nations League games. The Selecao will open the Nations League by hosting Wales on September 24. They then play Norway and Denmark away before hosting Norway on October 4. Ronaldo said the summer’s World Cup was his last, but he is yet to announce his retirement from international football. Lionel Messi said goodbye to Argentina last month , and it was speculated the Portuguese star could follow his great rival and retire. But Ronaldo is not yet ready to bring the curtain down on his illustrious international career. The 41-year-old is part of a 25-man squad selected by Jesus, who was his club boss last season when they helped Al-Nassr win the Saudi Pro League title. Jesus, who has previously managed Benfica and Sporting Lisbon, was appointed as Portugal’s head coach in July. He replaced Roberto Martinez, who stepped down from his post after the Selecao’s World Cup exit. Ronaldo is the leading scorer for men’s international soccer with 146 goals. The former Real Madrid star became the first player to score at six World Cups last summer. However, his overall performances at the tournament drew criticism from fans who were not happy with his reduced mobility and non-existent defensive contribution. If Ronaldo plays at Euro 2028, he will be 43 by then.
