The Brazilian remains one of the most underappreciated club icons of recent memory. Roberto Firmino never seemed interested in chasing the spotlight or soaking up the acclaim of the Anfield crowd. Instead, he was the perfect cog in Jurgen Klopp’s machine, quietly keeping everything ticking while providing the energy and intelligence that allowed Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to flourish. Firmino was incredibly selfless, always willing to sacrifice his own numbers for the benefit of the team. But that shouldn’t disguise just how talented he was. He could produce moments of genuine brilliance while relentlessly pressing, linking play and creating space for others. Without Firmino, it is difficult to imagine Liverpool achieving everything they did under Klopp. His contribution was enormous, even if it was sometimes overlooked. Instead, Liverpool want a forward in the mould of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah - someone whose first instinct is to score. Alexander Isak fits that profile perfectly. The Swede represents Liverpool’s future and he was signed to put the ball in the net. So far, he has delivered, scoring three goals in his first three Premier League games under Andoni Iraola. But behind him, another player is emerging as Liverpool’s new Firmino. Why Lewis Koumas is just like Firmino Ever since pre-season, the Welshman has emerged as a genuine option in the attacking line. Koumas scored against Sunderland in Iraola's first ever game, and he's been regularly making cameos in competitive matches as well. Koumas made his Premier League and Champions League debut under Iraola, and it's clear he is a key part of the Spaniard's plans. It's easy to see why, Koumas presses tirelessly. Like Firmino he works for the team, and he facilitates and makes everyone better around him. His most recent performance against Tottenham may not have seen him score a goal nor get an assist yet he was still awarded with the Man of the Match award. That's because he worked so hard for the team and his press was so good. It reminded us of watching prime Firmino. Koumas is still young. He's only 20-years-old. At the same age Firmino was just starting out at Hoffenheim. Under Iraola, the Welshman could genuinely become a huge asset, and in the process the Reds have found their new Firmino. The game against Tottenham on Tuesday night made it official.
