Flick’s Barcelona on course to break historic record held by Mourinho’s Real Madrid The dominance of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona pushed Real Madrid to desperate measures in the summer, not only in terms of transfer activity but also in terms of managerial changes. After seeing two managers just last season, the club brought in Jose Mourinho as a candidate to challenge Flick’s Barcelona. After all, the Portuguese coach oversaw one of Real Madrid’s golden periods and was seen as the best possible candidate. The Catalans, however, have started off the season in fine form and are flying across all competitions. In fact, they appear on course to break one of Mourinho’s golden Real Madrid records as well. A record of dominance The 2011-12 version of Real Madrid that played under Mourinho’s command was special. With the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain flying, they coasted to the league title. Mourinho’s record is in danger. Further, they also reached 100 points for the first time in their history and lost only two league games all season. Barcelona’s start to the new season, however, throws the club’s record goalscoring season at threat of being bettered, and it is ironic that it is Mourinho who is the manager of Real Madrid at this point in time once more. A stunning start So far this season, Barcelona have scored 28 goals in six games with an average of 4.6 goals per game. Beyond that, Fermin Lopez, Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and even Gabriel Jesus have left their mark in attack, and it is clear that the manager has no dearth of goalscorers. Should the Catalans keep up the same goalscoring rate, they are projected to hit a staggering 174 goals in La Liga. While that may not be sustainable in the long run, hitting and crossing the 121 goal mark seems well within reach.
