Everyone's finally caught up to Liverpool's biggest problem: Except Liverpool Liverpool have a massive problem on their hands and people are finally noticing. Except Liverpool, however. Liverpool spent an awful lot of money in the summer once again. Only this time, they didn't sell over £200m worth of players to fund it all - it was a massive outlay, bringing in Bradley Barcola, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo on loan and locking down some youth players for 2027, too. And yet, the team doesn't appear to work very well. Liverpool haven't been awful this season but they haven't been particularly good, either. Andoni Iraola is still figuring out the right mix of players - but there are legitimate questions over whether there is a right mix of players in this group. Richard Hughes has built a squad that isn't a natural fit, ignoring a gigantic problem that everyone has finally caught up to. Except for Liverpool, of course. Liverpool's midfield problem There has been an enormous amount of talk about Liverpool's midfield this season. It's principally because it looks so unbalanced, with the Reds leaving gaps through the middle and looking unable to control games. That's led for calls to sign a defensive midfielder, while now you've got the likes of The Times' Jonathan Northcroft pointing out that Liverpool have overwhelmingly attacking midfielders in their group and that creates a natural imbalance. And that's all true! Liverpool need a defensive midfielder. All of their top midfield options - Ryan Gravenberch , Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister - are natural attack-minded midfielders, too. Only, this was a problem last season . It was arguably the problem last season and something we went on and on about . It felt literally impossible to believe that Liverpool would exit the transfer window without signing a controlling midfield player. But they did just that. And with Curtis Jones gone - another attacking midfielder turned centre-midfielder - Liverpool actually lost their best controlling central player. Now they're even lighter through the middle of the pitch. We're not entirely sure how it's gotten to this point and Liverpool should never have entered this season with the midfield options they have. It's ridiculously poor squad planning that they have. But it does appear that overwhelming sentiment and pressure will land them a new midfielder in 2027. We hope that's Lamine Camara. Above all, we just hope it's not another attacking player.
