Barcelona defender could earn a second chance after Christensen’s injury development
Barcelona defender could earn a second chance after Christensen’s injury development Barcelona suffered a massive blow in their win over Sevilla last night as Andreas Christensen left the field injured and suffered a muscle tear. The Danish player will be out for a few weeks, and while the international break comes as a partial saviour, there is no guarantee that he will be back in time for when club football returns. Hansi Flick and Co., in that sense, could have a centre-back crisis given that Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin remain as the only other trusted options in the department. As reported by SPORT , the current situation could trigger a shuffle of cards. A chance for Kounde Jules Kounde’s importance this season has drastically fallen, with Flick placing him behind Eric Garcia on the right-back pecking order. Christensen will be out for a few weeks. The Frenchman has not had it easy so far this season, as he has not played a single minute in the last three games and has also started only twice all season. Christensen’s injury, however, could open the door for him to return to centre-back. The player’s versatility gives the manager faith in his abilities , and he could even start as a centre-back if need be in the coming games. The international break with France could help him regain his match rhythm. Need to stay alert While there is no doubt that Kounde is a fabulous player, his performances in recent seasons have been headlined by constant concentration lapses. Kounde has a lot to prove. (Photo by Judit Cartiel/Getty Images) The player has often appeared lethargic and has become a weak link at the back, often even targeted directly by opponents. Should he move to centre-back in a system as challenging to uphold as Hansi Flick’s, he simply cannot afford any more lapses in concentration and will have to put his all out on the field. In fact, there is even a strong case for him to earn a chance as a starting right-back once more, especially given Eric Garcia’s subpar performances in recent games. Kounde will, thus, have his chances and all eyes are on whether he can make the most of them.
