The Netherlands international is now only the fifth different player to do so in a Premier League match, after netting three times during Sunderland's 5-3 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday. It is the first time it has happened in the league since 2007, and only the sixth time in the competition's history. The last player to achieve the feat was Roque Santa Cruz, scoring a hat-trick for Blackburn Rovers in a 5-3 defeat to Wigan Athletic in December 2007. The four other instances all took place before 2000. In September 1996, Dwight Yorke scored three for Aston Villa in a 4-3 loss away at Newcastle. Dion Dublin also hit three for Coventry City in December 1995 during a 4-3 defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday. Finally, former Southampton forward Matt Le Tissier has the dubious honour of scoring hat-tricks in Premier League defeats on not just one but two occasions. As well as doing so in the first ever Premier League season, during a 4-3 defeat at Oldham Athletic in May 1993, he repeated the feat in August 1995, during a 4-3 loss at home to Nottingham Forest.
