Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will remain Netherlands captain under Xavi Xavi has confirmed that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will remain captain of the Dutch national team under him. The former Barcelona head coach was speaking following the announcement of his first squad as head coach of the Netherlands . There had been talk of van Dijk potentially not being in the squad, but the Liverpool defender retains his spot in the team and the captaincy. Van Dijk will therefore lead the Netherlands as Xavi oversees the sides opening games in the Nations League. They will open their account against Germany on Thursday, before games against Serbia and Greece to round out the window. The Liverpool defender will therefore have a chance to make it 100 caps for his nation, as he currently sits on 96 following the 2026 World Cup. In that time, the former Celtic and Southampton defender has scored 13 goals for the Netherlands. So far this season, van Dijk has played six games for Liverpool, with five in the Premier League and one in the Champions League.
