Discussing the situation on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch acknowledged the continuing appeal of Minteh but questioned how Liverpool could accommodate him. The interest may endure. The opportunity is much less straightforward. Minteh interest does not guarantee January movement Minteh’s pace and work rate make him an understandable subject of discussion around an Andoni Iraola side. Liverpool may also retain an interest in giving their attack a more natural option on the right. Lynch accepted that there could still be a desire to improve the balance, while stressing the importance of circumstances. “I’m sure the admiration is still there for the player,” he said. Admiration, however, is only the beginning of a recruitment decision. A club also needs a role for the incoming player and a realistic plan for those whose opportunities would shrink. Lynch’s central concern was blunt: “But you probably have to shift someone because I don’t understand how that would work.” That leaves any January move dependent on more than Liverpool’s opinion of Minteh’s qualities. Gakpo form changes Liverpool’s calculations Gakpo is the clearest reason the situation has shifted. His contribution on the right, including his role in creating the winner at Bournemouth, has strengthened his importance to the current attack. Lynch described the arrangement as encouraging without pretending it had solved every attacking issue. “It’s working nicely at times, I think. I don’t think it’s perfect,” he said. Perfection is a high threshold for any selection. What matters is that Gakpo is contributing, competing and helping Liverpool win matches. Moving him on would therefore involve surrendering something tangible in pursuit of a different balance. Lynch also questioned whether the necessary market would exist. “So to go into January, you would have to have some January interest in Gakpo. And is that going to be there? We don’t know that at the moment.” Without that interest, the proposed sequence of departure and arrival remains hypothetical. Attacking competition leaves little spare room The difficulty extends beyond choosing between two players. Adding another winger would affect the distribution of minutes throughout Liverpool’s attack, including opportunities for younger members of the squad. Lynch questioned how those existing options would be used if Minteh arrived. A crowded forward line may look reassuring on paper, but the manager still has to keep players involved and create space for development. The podcast also raised the non-homegrown registration picture. That adds another consideration to a deal already dependent on finding sufficient playing time. For Liverpool, the task is to build a squad whose parts work together. Signing an admired player becomes harder to justify if his arrival leaves several others with little prospect of meaningful involvement. January deal needs circumstances to change Lynch did not dismiss a future move. His reservation concerned the logic of completing one while the existing attacking group remains in place. “To sign him now without Gakpo leaving wouldn’t really make any sense to me,” he said. That is a useful distinction between a player remaining on Liverpool’s radar and a transfer becoming likely in the next window. The first can be true without the second following. An unexpected departure or a change in Gakpo’s circumstances could reopen the discussion. There is currently no basis in Lynch’s assessment to assume either will happen simply to accommodate Minteh. Gakpo’s form has earned him a prominent place in Liverpool’s plans. Unless that picture changes, January looks an awkward moment to add another winger, however much admiration remains.
