Kylian Mbappé reveals having been ‘close’ to Liverpool before moving to PSG Kylian Mbappé’s (27) career needs no introduction. Having made his name at AS Monaco, the French striker quickly moved to Paris Saint-Germain, before finally realising his dream of signing for Real Madrid two years ago. However, the 2018 World Cup winner could well have followed a very different path. So much so that, in an interview with The Athletic , he revealed he had come close to joining Liverpool FC shortly before committing to PSG. And this was for family reasons. “My mum’s favourite destination was Liverpool; she wanted me to go there,” Mbappé explained. “There was a time, when I was at Monaco, when I had to make a decision and I was close to joining Liverpool. My mum was a big fan of Jürgen Klopp, and he’s an amazing manager. I met him and I have a wonderful relationship with him. I have great respect for him.” However, despite a long discussion with the German coach – now a legend at the Reds – Mbappé had other plans. “I didn’t listen to (my mum). I wanted to go to my city, Paris. I wanted to play in my own country. I didn’t want to leave my country.” Eventually transferred to PSG for €180m, Mbappé has made the most of his seven years at the capital club to establish himself as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, finding the net 256 times – and providing 110 assists – in 308 matches, whilst winning numerous domestic trophies with Les Rouge et Bleu .
