Eriksen’s cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) delivered a shock during the incident, but he was conscious enough to walk to an ambulance before being taken to hospital for further checks. The incident brought back memories of the cardiac arrest he suffered during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021. Eriksen was later fitted with an ICD to help control dangerous heart rhythms before returning to professional football. He continued his career at Brentford and Manchester United in the Premier League before joining Wolfsburg as a free agent last year. Despite his latest setback, Eriksen enjoyed his first season in Germany, racking up three goals and 10 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. After leaving the club, Eriksen said: “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together. “I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL. “I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period.” Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club respected Eriksen’s decision and wanted to give him the freedom to decide what was best for him. “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” he said. “He has already experienced and achieved a great deal during his extraordinary career. “Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best.”
