Elliot sticking to guns in search of Carlisle upturn

Carlisle is the third club that Rob Elliot has been in charge of, after Gateshead and Crawley [Getty Images] Head coach Rob Elliot says he is not going to move away from what he believes in as he tries to get Carlisle United's season moving in the right direction. The Blues are winless in four games and have only won two out of nine since Elliot joined the club in the summer from Gateshead. A dispiriting 1-0 loss at Eastleigh has them 16th in the National League, only two points above the relegation zone. This Saturday, they host Woking at Brunton Park (15:00 BST) with the Surrey club two places and one point behind them with the attention squarely on Elliot. "I've said to the players, 'the pressure's on me, not you," he told BBC Radio Cumbria. "If you want to be in football or a football a manager, you have to be able to handle that. "What I'm not going to do is start chasing things and coming away from what I'm here to do, which is take a younger, hungrier squad and develop a style of play that allows us to be successful in the short, medium and long-term." Carlisle finished third last season under Mark Hughes with a club-record 95 points. But they lost in the play-off semi-final at home to Boreham Wood and finished 13 points behind league winners York City. Home and away defeats to both them and Rochdale, who finished second, were big reasons in heading for a new direction this campaign. However, with nearly a quarter of the games gone, Carlisle are not where the club and fans expect them to be, and Elliot is demanding a more ruthless streak. "Unfortunately we haven't put up the amount of points that we would have liked," he said. "But I don't think it's how we've set the team up or the opportunities we're creating. It's because we've let ourselves down in the key moments. "We have to stay strong and stay consistent to it, otherwise you're then going back to the drawing board."
