Report: Chelsea favourites to sign Premier League midfielder Chelsea Interest in Alex Scott Could Become Major Transfer Story Chelsea’s midfield search is already beginning to take shape, and while Lamine Camara continues to generate plenty of attention, Alex Scott might ultimately become the more intriguing name to watch. The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea regard the Bournemouth midfielder as a top target, although securing him during the January transfer window could prove extremely difficult. That should surprise nobody. Scott is becoming increasingly important to Bournemouth and, at 23, fits neatly into the profile Chelsea have repeatedly targeted. Alex Scott Emerges on Chelsea Radar The Daily Mail makes Bournemouth’s position particularly clear: “Chelsea regarding Alex Scott as a top target is no secret, though Bournemouth categorically insisted they would not do a deal in the summer and they may stand by that stance this January, too. Convincing another club to part with one of their better players midway through a campaign can be extremely challenging, and costly.” That last word matters. Bournemouth have little incentive to make life easy for Chelsea. Scott is under contract, is established in the Premier League and has developed into a midfielder capable of influencing games through possession, movement and intelligent positioning. Any January negotiation would therefore begin from a position of considerable Bournemouth strength. Bournemouth Hold Strong Position There is also recent evidence of how Bournemouth approach valuable assets. The Daily Mail notes: “Bournemouth sold Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City last January but that was via his release clause worth £65m. When Bournemouth eventually warm towards selling Scott, we can expect Chelsea to be at the table.” Scott presents a different situation if there is no contractual mechanism forcing Bournemouth into negotiations. That potentially leaves Chelsea facing a simple question. How much extra are they prepared to pay for January availability? Mid season transfers involving important Premier League players tend to carry a premium because the selling club must consider the sporting consequences alongside the financial return. Camara Competition Adds Another Dimension Chelsea’s wider midfield search also includes Monaco’s Lamine Camara, whose proposed £47million move collapsed on deadline day. That makes Scott particularly interesting. Chelsea already know the Premier League player, they have maintained their admiration and Bournemouth know that interest exists. There is no obvious reason for Bournemouth to rush. Scott’s performances can strengthen their negotiating position further, while Chelsea must decide whether January urgency outweighs the financial advantages of waiting until summer. For Scott, meanwhile, continued development at Bournemouth could make that eventual decision considerably bigger. Chelsea may already be watching closely, but they are unlikely to be alone for long. Our View – EPLIndex Analysis From a Chelsea supporter’s perspective, Alex Scott is probably the name here that deserves particularly close attention. There is something appealing about targeting a 23 year old midfielder who already understands Premier League football. Chelsea have invested heavily in potential, and Scott offers potential alongside meaningful experience of the division. The question is January. Bournemouth have absolutely no reason to sell cheaply. If Scott remains an important player and there is no release clause creating an obvious route into negotiations, Chelsea could be quoted an enormous figure simply because Bournemouth can afford to say no. That should encourage patience rather than panic. Camara is clearly an attractive alternative, although Liverpool’s reported interest and Monaco’s position make that deal complicated too. Chelsea therefore appear to be looking at midfielders who are young enough to develop while already possessing substantial first team experience. Scott fits that description beautifully. If Bournemouth eventually indicate that they are prepared to negotiate, Chelsea should certainly be part of that conversation. Until then, watching how Scott develops this season might tell us whether he can become the type of midfielder worth making a major investment in. January could come too soon. The longer term interest feels far more significant.
