Former Tottenham Hotspur striker backs Harry Kane to make NFL switch Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Clive Allen has backed Harry Kane to make the unusual switch from football to the NFL. He believes the England captain would be successful in American football. Kane has been open about wanting to try other sports once his football career begins to wind down. The Bayern Munich striker has even suggested that a spell in Major League Soccer (MLS) could be a useful stepping stone towards becoming a specialist kicker in the NFL. Kane is currently in talks with Bayern over a new contract and an official confirmation for a three-year extension is expected in the coming weeks. While the England captain is focused on his football career, he has been open about his love for other sports. He’s interested in golf, but the 33-year-old has admitted that a future in the NFL is far more realistic than attempting to become a professional golfer. Allen knows better than most what it takes to make the jump between sports. After playing Premier League football for West Ham United, he moved into American football just three years later. The former striker became a placekicker for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe in 1997, successfully converting all six of his field-goal attempts and seven of 10 extra points. He explained that NFL kicking requires a very different technique but believes Kane has the mindset to succeed. “It’s a crazy game,” he said on talkSPORT . “It’s a violent game. It’s a game that I played for a season for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe. “I found it fascinating. A different technique in obviously kicking American football, but a massive challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed. And I’m sure the talk is that Harry Kane is interested in doing it. “Harry will be able to do it, knowing his mentality, the way that he has conducted himself in terms of developing his soccer game. He will be a hit, I think, if he kicks in the NFL.” Kane could look to Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey for inspiration. Aubrey also moved from football to American football after spending time with MLS side Toronto FC before establishing himself as one of the NFL’s leading kickers.
