Wayne Rooney reveals Man Utd and Everton are the only jobs that could lure him back into management Wayne Rooney has cast doubt over his future in management but has named two clubs that could potentially change his mind. The former England captain prematurely ditched his coaching badge in December 2024, when his most recent stint at Plymouth Argyle went pear-shaped. He was sacked as Plymouth manager after winning just four of his 23 Championship games in charge, leaving the club languishing at the bottom of the table. That was after equally appalling stints with Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham City. Rooney moved into coaching after retiring as a player in January 2021 but hasn’t been in a dugout for almost two years. Despite failing to hack it as a manager , he seemingly hasn’t given up on those dreams. He recently said he could return, but only if a special opportunity came up. “I doubt it – again, I know I’ve done four difficult jobs,” Rooney said (via talkSPORT ). “The only way I’d go back in any capacity would be Everton or Manchester United, but that’s very unlikely.” When asked which of the two jobs he would choose, Rooney said: “The one that comes first.” Rooney started his career at Everton and joined the academy aged nine before making his first team debut for his boyhood club as a teenager. He returned for a second spell later in his career and finished with 28 goals in 117 appearances for the Toffees. However, it was at United where Rooney established himself as one of the greatest players in the club and Premier League history. He spent 13 years at Old Trafford after joining in 2004, winning 17 major trophies, including five Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. Rooney also became United’s record goalscorer, scoring 253 times in 559 appearances. He’s also the Premier League’s third all-time top scorer after netting 208 times for Everton and United. Only Alan Shearer and Harry Kane have scored more Premier League goals than the Englishman. Rooney is also the only player to record at least 200 Premier League goals and 100 assists, while his 53 England goals rank second behind Kane. With 120 caps, he is also among England’s most-capped players.
