Speaking to The Athletic , Parish explained why Palace refused to sanction Sarr’s departure despite the player apparently being keen on Anfield. Palace Stand Firm Over Ismaila Sarr “It’s unfortunate with Ismaila, but that wasn’t really a situation that was of our doing,” Parish said. “A club (Liverpool) came in and, with the amount of money they bid, they couldn’t seriously think in that market it was going to get done at that level, and then they didn’t come back in for him.” That second sentence is particularly revealing. I’m not criticising anybody for doing it. But it’s not going to happen,” he said. Liverpool Timing Complicated Sarr Deal There was another problem, Liverpool arrived late. Palace had little incentive to lose a player who scored 21 goals across all competitions last season, including nine as the club won the Conference League. Parish acknowledged Sarr wanted the transfer. “You could understand Ismaila would have liked to go and if it wasn’t five days before the end of the window and the money was right, then we would have tried to facilitate it,” Parish said. That feels significant. Palace were not necessarily declaring Sarr unavailable at any price. They were effectively asking Liverpool to compensate them for losing a major attacking player with almost no time to find an adequate replacement. Barcola Move Changed Liverpool’s Plans Liverpool ultimately declined to increase their offer and moved elsewhere. Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a guaranteed £106 million, potentially rising to £123 million with add-ons, giving Andoni Iraola another elite attacking option. That decision also provides some context to Liverpool’s Sarr valuation. Paying £75 million for a 28-year-old would have represented a substantial commitment, regardless of his excellent Palace form. Liverpool clearly admired Sarr. They also appear to have established a price beyond which the deal stopped making sense. Palace were equally entitled to establish their own number. Sometimes transfer sagas do not require villains. Two clubs simply value the same player differently, and five days before a deadline is rarely the moment when compromise becomes easier. What immediately catches the eye is the difference between being willing to pay £50 million for Sarr and eventually committing more than £100 million to Barcola. That suggests Liverpool were prepared to spend heavily, they simply did not believe Sarr represented £75 million of value. Transfer fees at this level have become increasingly detached from traditional ideas about age, resale value and proven output. Once a selling club knows an interested side has substantial resources, negotiations change immediately. Sarr’s 21 goals last season are impressive, and nine goals during Palace’s Conference League triumph underline his importance. At 28, though, Liverpool would have been purchasing someone approaching his peak rather than an asset whose value might increase significantly. Barcola presents a different calculation.
