From Cumbernauld to the SWPL: Lucy Barclay returns to where it began Lucy Barclay learned the game in her back garden, kicking a ball about with her dad for hours. This week, the Hamilton midfielder returned to the club where it all began, Cumbernauld Colts Girls , carrying new training equipment for the girls following in her footsteps. The Scotland Under-19 international nominated the Colts for a kit giveaway run by ScottishPower, principal partner of the Scottish Women’s Premier League. For Barclay, it was a chance to give back to the club that helped her along the way. Where It Began Cumbernauld Colts gave Barclay her first platform in organised football before she progressed to Celtic and then Hamilton Academical in the SWPL. She returned to a club that has grown considerably since those early years. Cumbernauld Colts now has more than 160 girls and women playing from under-eight level through to its senior first team. Some things were different in her day. “When I was here it was ‘one kit fits all’, and nothing really fit me,” she said. “It can affect confidence and performance of players when they’re not entirely comfortable.” For Barclay, seeing how much the club has developed made the return particularly meaningful. “It’s great to be able to give something back to the team where I started playing football,” she said. Giving Something Back ScottishPower invited players from the country’s top two women’s leagues who came through the grassroots game to nominate a community club that mattered to them. The scheme is providing six kit packages to grassroots clubs, featuring bibs, cones, water bottles and Puma footballs, plus 11 pairs of new Puma football boots to help clubs support players facing financial barriers to participation. Barclay returned to present the equipment alongside ScottishPower trainee Anna Gallie, with Cumbernauld Colts club development officer Stephanie Knight receiving the donation. Boots, Balls and the Next Generation For the players at Cumbernauld Colts, the immediate impact is much simpler: more equipment to help them play. “Having the kit donation is brilliant, the girls are so grateful,” Knight said. “Seeing their faces when they get new boots and balls is fantastic; it just helps them do what they love.” The giveaway forms part of ScottishPower’s wider work with Scottish Women’s Football and the SWPL, aimed at extending support from the elite game into grassroots football. Back Where It Started Barclay left Cumbernauld Colts as a young player. She returned as an SWPL player and Scotland youth international, helping equip another generation at the start of the same journey. Years after kicking a ball around the back garden with her dad, Barclay can now point to where those hours eventually led. Barclay started where they are now.
