Rayan Cherki, Zidane provide updates on Kylian Mbappe’s injury: ‘Not looking good’ France kicked off the Zinedine Zidane era with a win over Turkey last night, and who else to score the winning goal but Real Madrid’s goalscoring machine Kylian Mbappe. The World Cup winner  started the game  as a left-winger with Ousmane Dembele starting at centre-forward, and he scored with a thunderous finish early in the second half to give his side the lead. Immediately after the goal, however, he went down in severe pain and was tended to by the medical staff. Mbappe attempted to play on but had to be taken off the field just five minutes after his injury, as it became evident he could not continue. To lose the star forward at a point in the season where they have already been subpar, needless to say, comes as a massive blow for Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid’s plans.  Zidane’s two cents Zidane admitted that Mbappe’s injury looks serious. (Photo by Burak Kara/Getty Images) The new French national team manager Zinedine Zidane provided an update on Mbappe’s injury after the game via  GOAL , and he made it clear that the setback did not appear minor from his perspective. “Kylian Mbappé has hyper-extended his knee,”  Zidane began, explaining how the injury took place. “He is not feeling okay,”  he added about Mbappe’s feelings. Adding a personal opinion on what he made of the situation, Zidane said, “Kylian Mbappe’s injury is not looking good.” He also confirmed the player will not continue with the national team in the ongoing international break and that he will fly back to the Spanish capital. “He will have to return to Madrid.” A teammate’s insight Mourinho will hope Mbappe’s injury is not serious. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images) France winger Rayan Cherki also spoke to the media after his side’s win last night, and his opinion was far more reassuring than Zidane’s. “He’s doing well, he’s doing well, we were worried about him but then we saw it wasn’t anything serious,”  Cherki said (h/t  Madrid Xtra ) “He’ll come back stronger ; that’s the most important thing,”  he added. Zidane’s and Cherki’s statements are, needless to say, polar opposites, and only the test results can clarify the exact nature and severity of the lesion Mbappe is suffering from. Once the player returns to Madrid, he will undergo the required diagnostics and an official statement on his injury can be expected soon after.
