The coach has now returned with a lot more experience under his belt, and with his approach to the game and management somewhat changed. While some people might have doubts about his ability to lead as a club as big as Real Madrid at this stage of his career, there are still a lot of reasons to remain optimistic that he will be able to get the Merengue team out of its current predicaments. In fact, only a few months ago, it looked quite far-fetched to suggest that Mourinho would again manage Los Blancos. As Diario AS has reported, the manager himself appeared in an interview with Bet it drive Show, and opened up about how he ended up returning to Madrid. The Portuguese manager made it clear that it was the club that wanted him back: “I have come back because Real Madrid wanted me to come back. At the end of last season, after two seasons, the best club in the world did not achieve the best results and there was a slight falling-out with the fans. The club contacted me and said: ‘We know you, you know us, you know the club, you know the culture, the people… We need you. We need you to rebuild, we need you to start again the incredible decade the club has had. We need someone with your profile.’ So it is a great opportunity. I was happy at Benfica. I was happy in Portugal. I left my country so many years ago… so when I returned to Benfica, I was happy there. But Real Madrid is Real Madrid. Everyone at the club understood that it was a great opportunity for me to come back. So we left Benfica on good terms, and I could not be happier or more motivated than I am.” Mourinho also opened up about his objectives and expectations at the Merengue club: “I like reality. I don’t like a defensive partnership where the objectives are very low, where the objectives are simply to play it safe. I like to aim high, but I like reality. One of the things I felt when I worked at some clubs was that it wasn’t realistic. I want to go beyond the objectives. I don’t want them to be low or easy; I want them to be realistic. And I felt that, because I had achieved so much with big ambitions throughout my career, at some point people looked at me and thought: ‘Only because of him can we set crazy objectives.’ There are no miracles in football, and I don’t think there are miracles in any other field either. There is talent, there is teamwork, there is ambition, there is empathy… but you have to play with ambition and realistic ambitions. And Real Madrid is the kind of place where the objectives are, of course, the biggest. But at the same time, the talent you have available and the organisation you have at your disposal are also related to this type of ambition.” Although he was not able to win the Champions League, Jose Mourinho’s work with Real Madrid during his first stint was certainly highly commendable. Hopefully, he will once again be able to get the results the club expects from him, and get the team back to winning ways.
