Was Tennessee's successful onside kick late in its loss to Texas actually against the rules? The No. 14 Volunteers pulled off a drop-kick onside kick for the chance to at least tie the No. 1 Longhorns inside the final minute. But Tennessee's Hail Mary attempt on the final play of the game fell incomplete after the Vols couldn't get into field goal range. After Faizon Brandon hit Mike Matthews for a 30-yard TD with 1:22 to go, punter Jackson Ross' onside kick was recovered by Arion Carter after the ball bounced off Texas wide receiver Ryan Wingo's hands. A flag was thrown on the play, but after the back judge and referee conferred, it was picked up and Tennessee retained possession. "So I got to get a ruling on that because that was a bit unique about walking into a drop kick like that." A drop kick on a kickoff is perfectly legal as long as the kicker contacts the ball as it hits the ground. However, Tennessee appeared to take the kick too far behind the 35-yard line. Ross kicked the ball just ahead of the Tennessee 33-yard line, roughly two yards back of the kickoff spot and subsequent restraining line. According to the NCAA rulebook, "a ball from a free kick formation must be kicked legally and from some point on Team A's restraining line and on or between the hash marks." The only exception noted in that rule book subsection states that "after a safety, when a punt or drop kick is used, the ball may be kicked from behind the kicking team's restraining line." Did the two yards make a big difference in the outcome of the kick? We don't know for sure. And at least for the sake of the college football discourse this week, the result of the play had no bearing on the outcome of the game.
