The Englishman left L4 for nothing upon the expiry of his contract and, even though Jeremie Frimpong was brought in to replace him, the Dutchman has failed to meet expectations. Indeed, the Reds did also have Conor Bradley to plug the gap but, as has been the case for the past few years, the Northern Irishman spent most of the campaign side-lined due to injury. This forced Liverpool into bringing Ronald Araujo in and, while at the time that felt like a rushed decision, he's probably been one of their best performers. Unfortunately, Araujo is only on loan to Liverpool and, while they do have an option to buy him worth around €55 million, it's unclear whether they'll activate that or not due to his age and injury history. Right-backs have therefore been linked with an Anfield switch for some time now and, somewhat surprisingly, Alexander-Arnold has now been linked with a return to L4 with his representatives even contacting Liverpool to sound out a potential move. "That has led to speculation over Alexander-Arnold’s future, with intermediaries now understood to have been assessing potential options for the defender," TEAMtalk wrote . "TEAMtalk sources have confirmed that those discussions have included contact with Liverpool, where Alexander-Arnold spent his entire senior career before leaving for Madrid, while Premier League champions Arsenal have also been approached. "Both Liverpool and Arsenal are in the market for right-backs, making Alexander-Arnold an obvious name to explore given his experience at the highest level. "We can also confirm that Man City and Chelsea have been contacted as part of those discussions. "Sources have told us that the English clubs do have potential interest in Alexander-Arnold and have remained attentive to his situation since he left the UK." It's hard to tell whether all Liverpool fans would welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back or not When Alexander-Arnold initially exited Liverpool, fans felt like they were betrayed. The right-back made his way through the Reds' youth ranks and even became a Champions League and Premier League winner with his boyhood club. And, while his decision to exit makes sense as he wanted to explore a new team, city and culture, it was still hard for fans to not feel like they'd been betrayed by his departure. Throughout his career, the Englishman has netted 27 goals but, it's his assists what are the most impressive part about his game. Defensively, he could certainly be better but, if a team needs a creative spark and someone to turn a game on its head, Alexander-Arnold is the player that they would go for. It's unclear how much a deal for the right-back would cost and, it would definitely be a pain for Liverpool to try and convince certain fans that he's what they need. But, on the face of things, no player has managed to do what he did at Anfield yet and, if Alexander-Arnold wants to come home , it's certainly something that needs to be discussed, rather than just brushed off.
