Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch discussed Liverpool’s potential recruitment plans and the possibility of strengthening both sides of Andoni Iraola’s defence. Mitchell was one of the names raised by Davis, with the Crystal Palace left-back approaching the end of his contract at Selhurst Park. The 27-year-old is currently due to become a free agent in summer 2027, although Palace reportedly want to secure him to fresh terms. Liverpool are among the clubs being linked with his signature. For Lynch, there is plenty about the potential deal that makes sense. Mitchell Could Offer Liverpool Smart Free Transfer Discussing Liverpool’s options at left-back, Lynch said: “Someone like Mitchell as a left-back on a free transfer, he’s homegrown as well. That would be a pretty smart signing.” The homegrown element could prove particularly attractive when Liverpool assess the composition of their squad, while Mitchell already possesses extensive Premier League experience. He has made more than 200 appearances in the competition for Crystal Palace and has remained a regular this season. Lynch also believes Mitchell could provide genuine competition if Liverpool decide to pursue him. “I think there’s a good chance he’d be coming and be really good competition at left-back for Liverpool,” he told Davis. “I think he’s quite a good player and, like I say, he ticks the homegrown box as well.” Competition Could Complicate Liverpool Move A free transfer for an established Premier League defender naturally attracts attention elsewhere. Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Mitchell, while Palace face their own decision over whether to renew his contract or potentially consider a sale before his existing terms expire. Lynch acknowledged that Liverpool would not necessarily have a straightforward path towards signing him. “It kind of depends what the competition is around him and how high the contract offers start to go,” he said. Mitchell could also receive opportunities elsewhere to establish himself as an undisputed first-choice left-back. “He could be offered to be a starter somewhere maybe,” Lynch added. “So, you know, maybe that makes it harder.” Still, his conclusion was clear: “He’d be a sensible one for me.” Photo: IMAGO Liverpool Full-Back Changes Could Be Coming Mitchell also needs to be viewed within Liverpool’s wider defensive situation. Davis and Lynch discussed the possibility of considerable movement at full-back, particularly with Kostas Tsimikas and Jeremie Frimpong. “It just wouldn’t be a surprise to see Kostas go at the end of the season,” Lynch said. He also questioned whether Frimpong will remain part of Liverpool’s longer-term plans. “I’ll be surprised if we get to the end of the season and you just kind of cut the losses there and think it was an experiment that didn’t really work out.” Those potential departures would create space for Ward to reshape Liverpool’s options. “With Tsimikas maybe likely to go on the left as well, you’re opening up some spots for you to do some business there at full-back,” Lynch explained. Mitchell Link Worth Watching for Liverpool There remains plenty to happen before Mitchell becomes available for nothing. Palace reportedly intend to accelerate attempts to secure his future, while interest from Liverpool and other Premier League clubs continues to be reported. Lynch nevertheless believes Liverpool’s interest in full-backs is logical given the questions surrounding the current squad. “I’d kind of keep an eye on every link that pops up in that position really,” he said, “because a lot of it makes sense that that’s an area Liverpool are keeping an eye on.” Mitchell certainly fits that conversation. Premier League proven, homegrown and potentially available without a transfer fee, the Crystal Palace defender could present Ward with exactly the type of opportunity Liverpool will have to assess carefully. As Lynch put it: “He’d be a sensible one for me.”
