There is only one sensible option to currently take in regards to the 115 saga surrounding Manchester City What looked like being an extended and quiet international break has turned into anything but. David Ornstein reported last Friday for The Athletic that Manchester City had been found guilty of the majority of the 115 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules they were charged with back in 2023. From there, City’s case and the future sanctions that the club may face have dominated conversations, social media, and news stories and headlines. All of that is understandable given the enormity of the case the Premier League laid at Manchester City and what could potentially occur. However, despite all of this, the only sensible option is to wait for the entire saga to play out. There are too many variables and alternatives left to play out just yet. Manchester City will fight to clear their name and are confident that they will do so. The stance and confidence of Manchester City throughout the 115 case hasn’t wavered. Even after David Ornstein’s report dropped, it hasn’t changed. City’s chairman, Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, has full confidence that City will ultimately clear their name. Manchester City’s chairman could not go in detail as to why City are so confident due to the confidentiality clauses that surround the case. But his stance has never wavered throughout the affair. Neither has Manchester City’s. Ferran Soriano explained at a meeting between the European Football Clubs Board in Copenhagen that City’s 115 case has a long way to go and that City are steadfast in their belief that they will clear the club’s name. So for now, the entire 115 case remains in a holding pattern. There is an appeal to be heard and possibly more steps to come. For now, the Premier League hasn’t officially announced their findings in the case against Manchester City. Clarity is needed on the situation , but it may not arrive imminently. Until this drawn-out ‘battle’ between City and the Premier League concludes, it does feel like it is stuck in the mud. For now, the entire 115 case surrounding Manchester City remains in a holding pattern. Yes, the reports of a guilty verdict have arrived. They are unavoidable at this stage. Given the size, scope and interest in the story, all of that is to be expected. But, as right now all that can be done is to wait for the entire affair to conclude or run its course. For example, if Manchester City are sanctioned, then subsequently cleared at a later date what mess would that create? That alternative hasn’t been considered in many quarters and it could be catastrophic for the Premier League given what is at stake. Conversely, if City appeal and the reported guilty verdict holds then all avenues are exhausted by the club. That would open them up to sanctions free of further legal challenges. The entire scenario of waiting for the 115 case to run its natural course isn’t a popular option, especially given how long the entire affair has run for. Football, Manchester City, and the Premier League do need this affair to one day end. However, accelerating to an ending is also fraught with danger. It isn’t what is being demanded, however it is the only logical scenario surrounding the affair.
