Keeping a 28-year-old international around purely as emergency depth benefits neither the player nor the club. Inter would also appear a natural destination. Chiesa understands Serie A, knows the tactical demands of Italian football and possesses attributes that could work within Chivu’s system. Liverpool should still avoid allowing circumstances to dictate the price. Jones demonstrated that Inter can negotiate patiently, and Liverpool were equally prepared to defend their valuation. Chiesa’s lack of football may weaken Liverpool’s position, but his experience and versatility retain value. For supporters, there will always be the lingering question of what might happen if he finally stays fit and receives a sustained run.
